Organizations of all sizes are learning what makes for an effective online presence. Here's what they say are four essentials for your website:
1. Update your Site Regularly
- Make a plan for updating and assign responsibility for gathering content
- Write stories about your organization, the people it impacts and the issues that affect your work
- Ask board members, volunteers and others to write about their experience
2. Make it Easy to Donate Online
- Research different online services, make a small donation to evaluate the experience
- Sign up for a donation processing system
- Place the donate button front and center on your site - don't make people search to donate
- Ask for people's support and inform them about how their contribution will help
3. Make it Easy to Navigate
- Put the navigation bar in the same place on all of your pages
- Ask board members, volunteers and others to navigate and critique the site on how easy it is to find information
- Look for other sites you like and that you find easy to navigate for ideas.
4. Collect Email Addresses
- Try out several email processing systems to see which one meets your needs
- Select an online email processing system that is easy for your staff to use
- Widen your base of supporters by capturing email addresses and keeping in touch
- Send out regular emails to keep people updated on your activities
Having these essentials gives your online fundraising efforts a strong foundation. Online is a great place to be creative about attracting attention and motivating people to support you. Don't forget to have fun!
